Why Diabetics Should Try Yoga

By Robbie Bainer

Learning how to manage and minimize stress is very important for anyone with diabetes because it helps them to relax which will help to bring their blood sugar levels down. By practicing yoga, a person with diabetes will achieve several benefits all at once. They will stretch their muscles, feel calmer and more at ease and also know that they have done some excellent exercise.

Yoga for Stress Relief

The practice of yoga includes a series of postures which require your brain to focus on exactly what your body is doing so that you maintain your balance. Because your brain is so focused on what you are doing and the way you are breathing, it doesn't have time to focus on anything negative or troublesome. You will leave each yoga session feeling positive, relaxed and energized which in turn will help your body deal with blood sugar issues and help stabilize your numbers.

Learning Yoga

You can learn yoga in an instructor led class, or you can buy a video or some books on how to do yoga. The best idea for beginners is to attend yoga classes. Do not be afraid to let your yoga instructor know that you have diabetes.

* Find a yoga school - You may have noticed that a lot of private yoga schools have been opening up over the last 10 years or so. The instructors in these schools are usually certified, well trained individuals, but always double check before you join their school. It is great to attend classes because then you will learn exactly how to do the posture movements.

* Grab a video from the library - Yoga is a great fitness activity to practice on a daily basis. For those days that you cannot make it to class why not pop in a video and practice your yoga at home.

* Seek out a partner - You might also want to learn yoga with a friend who is also learning, or you could connect with a friend who already knows yoga. They can help to give you advice and move your body in the right directions.

Yoga is an exercise that you can practice anywhere, such as at the gym, at home, or even in a hotel room if you travel a lot.

Safe Yoga Tips

As a diabetic you want to practice yoga to help you with your health issues. Here are a few tips to help you achieve the best possible results:

* Slow movements - Your instructor will explain to you that you want to move very slowly as you move from one position to another. This will help you maintain your balance so you won't fall over.

* Don't strain - If you begin to feel a strain in your body, then stop doing what you're doing or stop stretching so far. You should never feel pain or discomfort during yoga.

* Breathing - Long deep breathes is part of the mind body experience when you are practicing yoga. You will find that your mind will let go of any problems it is thinking of and your muscles will begin to relax.

Yoga is a great practice for diabetics, so if you have the chance, add it to your daily routine.
